Bangladesh's Shahid Minar commemorates the martyrs of the Bangla Language Movement of 21st February 1952. UNESCO first proclaimed 21st February as International Mother Language Day in November 1999 which was accepted by the UNGA's resolution in 2002 to promote and preserve linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.
